CHAPTER 5 Since Alvin served in the war against Hitler, and Sandy is participating in Lindbergh's policies, they start to argue a lot more than before Alvin participated in the war. Alvin also started to become more outgoing. Alvin was starting to shoot craps and play stud poker and with Alvin playing these types of games, he was rarely in the house anymore. Meanwhile, World War II goes even worse for the allies as U.S.S.R and Great Britain needed Lindbergh's america to embargo its arm and Japan Japan was comquering Burma, Malaya and New Guinea as well as Singapore, Borneo, Sumatra and Java. The Germans on the other hand were conquering almost half of the U.S.S.R. Yet Lindbergh would not yet allow the U.S. into the war and continuing to make friends with his Nazi allies. Back in New Jersey, Alvin continued to gamble and brought Phillip with him. Phillip stayed with Alvin to watch until Alvin gave Phillip $20 and started to go home. While Alvin was going home an F.B.I. agent came up to Phillip. He asked Phillip about how Alvin was doing and what Alvin and his gambling friend Slushy were talking about as well as Lindbergh, Fascists, Hitler and Aunt Evelyn. When Phillip got home after talking with Don the F.B.I. agent, he saw police cars realizing that Mr. Wishnow had died of mouth cancer. Seldon (his neighbor) and Mrs. Wishnow would live with the Roths. Phillip tries to escape from Seldon who always asks him to play chess and Phillip usually is a jerk to Seldon. The Roth's then found out that Alvin was gambling illegally when the F.B.I. questioned Bess and Sandy. The Roth's were almost going to kick Alvin out of the house until Uncle Monty came and told Alvin to get a job if he wants to continue to remain being part of the Roth family or start a new life. Alvin eventually found a job in Philadelphia and worked there. Back at Washington, Lindbergh and Nazi foreing minister Joachim von Ribbentrop is invited into the white house while Former President Roosevelt claimed that "for the sake of all freedom-loving americans, and particularly the tens of millions of Americans of European stock whose ancestral countries must live veneath the Nazis' crushing yoke" (P.174). Sandy continues to have a pro-Lindbergh view when Herman believes what Walt Winchell continues to say anti-Lindbergh view points. Sandy claims it is all lies and says how Lindbergh is helping our nation. Sandy also called his dad a dictator worse than Hitler and Bess slaps Sandy. The abuse and the diffrent viewpoints continue to divide the family up. Phillip also got hit after hearing one of his neighbors, Mr. Tirschwell was moving to Canada.
